China’s BYD has officially surged ahead of Tesla to become the world’s largest electric vehicle seller, signalling a major shift in the global EV market. The Shenzhen-based automaker announced that its battery-powered vehicle sales jumped by nearly 28 per cent in 2025, exceeding 2.25 million units.
By contrast, Tesla is projected to post about 1.65 million vehicle deliveries for the same period, according to analysts’ estimates. The development highlights mounting pressure on Elon Musk’s company, which faced slowing demand, tougher competition from Chinese brands and investor concerns over Musk’s political engagements.
Despite challenges from rivals at home, BYD continues to expand aggressively across Europe, Latin America and Southeast Asia, often undercutting competitors on price. The milestone reinforces China’s growing dominance in the global electric vehicle industry.
