Makurdi, Benue State – The Benue State government has unveiled plans to construct a new civil airport featuring international, domestic, and cargo terminals, as well as an export-import processing zone along the Makurdi–Gboko Road.
Airport Project Announcement
The Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Rev. Dr. Frederick Ikyaan, disclosed the plan on Friday during a strategic meeting with traditional rulers from Guma, Gboko, Gwer, and Tarka Local Government Areas.
He revealed that the airport will be located after Agasha junction, while the processing zone will span 100 hectares on the opposite side of the road.
Ikyaan confirmed that a land survey has already been completed and that Governor Hyacinth Alia has directed the immediate commencement of work.
Traditional Rulers React
During the meeting, Ter Gwer, Chief Dominic Akpe, and Ter Gboko, Chief Gabriel Shosom, welcomed the project as a landmark development. However, they stressed the importance of adequate compensation for affected communities.
They also commended Governor Alia’s vision and pledged their cooperation to ensure the project’s success.

Economic Impact of the Project
The proposed airport and processing zone are expected to:
- Improve air connectivity within and outside Nigeria.
- Boost agricultural exports by providing modern logistics facilities.
- Position Benue as a hub for trade and investment in the Middle Belt.
This initiative marks a significant step in Governor Alia’s plan to open Benue to new opportunities and transform the state’s economic landscape.
