Tension has escalated in Benue State after angry youths in Turan, Kwande Local Government Area, attacked and set ablaze the residence and office of the Mue Ter Ichongo, His Royal Highness Simon Baver, on Wednesday.
The mob reportedly stormed the monarch’s residence and office, destroying valuables before setting both properties on fire. Eyewitnesses said the attackers dispersed immediately after the destruction, leaving behind heavy damage to the traditional ruler’s properties.
The attack was said to be a retaliation following Tuesday’s deadly incident in Jato-Aka, which has heightened unrest in the area.
Security operatives were swiftly deployed to Turan to restore calm. While no casualties were recorded from the burning, investigations have been launched into both the Jato-Aka violence and the subsequent destruction in Turan.
Community leaders have since appealed for calm, urging residents to avoid further violence and to cooperate with security agencies to prevent escalation of the crisis.
