Bandits suspected to be members of the Lakurawa terrorist group have reportedly abducted the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Hon. Samaila Bambu, in his hometown, Bagudo, located in Bagudu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Naija News gathered that the incident occurred on Friday evening, throwing the community into panic as security operatives launched an immediate search operation.
Confirming the development to Punch, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, said the state government had been informed and was working closely with security agencies to ensure Bambu’s safe release.
“Yes, I just got the information about the alleged abduction of the Deputy Speaker in his hometown this evening. I am in touch with the Director of Security in the state,” Idris said.
“Once I get the details of what transpired, I will alert you on the government’s position. I can assure you that the state government is on top of the situation and will ensure he is released safely.”
The abduction adds to the growing wave of bandit attacks across northern Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi, Zamfara, and Niger States, where rural communities have come under frequent assault by armed groups.
In a related development, Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has warned against negotiating peace deals with armed bandits without necessary disarmament measures.
Speaking during a lecture at the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) in Abuja, Lawal cautioned that negotiating with armed groups who still possess weapons “undermines state authority and delays genuine peace.”
He said, “Any negotiation that allows bandits to keep their weapons weakens the state’s capacity to enforce law and order. Lasting peace requires disarmament and justice, not appeasement.”
As of press time, security operatives in Kebbi State are intensifying efforts to track down the attackers and secure the Deputy Speaker’s freedom.
