Ayra Starr: From “Rush” to Global Citizen — Nigeria’s Sabi Girl Shines on World Stage

Since the release of her debut EP in 2021, Ayra Starr has risen to become one of Africa’s most celebrated international artists. In less than five years, the “Sabi Girl” has collected milestones that many spend decades chasing — a Grammy nomination, MTV Europe Music Award nomination, Billboard Music Award nomination, and most recently, the 2025 BET Award for Best International Act.

Beyond accolades, Ayra has also stamped her presence on the world’s grandest stages, even sharing the spotlight with the legendary Coldplay. On September 27, she will take another giant stride, performing at the Global Citizen Festival in New York, alongside Cardi B, Shakira, and fellow African star, Tyla.

In an exclusive chat ahead of the event, Ayra reflected on her journey, her “Sabi Girl” energy, and the responsibility she feels carrying Afrobeats across the globe.

“Oh my God, it takes me back to when I was growing up listening to their songs and being the most adorable fangirl,” she said, recalling her days of dancing to Shakira. “Overall, I feel a sense of gratitude and recognition for my music. Afrobeats superstars paved the way for artists like me. I’m just glad to contribute my quota to the culture.”

Known for her electrifying stagecraft, Ayra says her performances embody the “Sabi Girl” brand.

“Sabi girl no dey carry last. You can see it in my performance, my setlist, dance routines, styling, and coordination. Before I get on stage, I give myself a pep talk to have fun and enjoy it.”

Surprisingly, her pre-show ritual sometimes includes a quick nap. “You’ll always find me goofing around backstage… and yes, I nap when I can before hitting the stage,” she laughed.

Speaking on her role in the growth of Afrobeats, she admitted it comes with responsibility.

“Being where I am, gracing the stages I’m fortunate to, gives me a sense of responsibility — first to myself, then to pay forward what I’m enjoying now because others paved the way for me.”

Her sound has crossed borders, resonating with fans globally. She believes this connection lies in music’s universality.

“That’s the beautiful thing about music; it transcends language, borders, and culture. People connect with my music because the themes are shared human experiences. They see themselves in my songs.”

On balancing her rapid rise with thoughts of legacy, Ayra said:

“I’m learning to let go of perfection and enjoy the process. This takes away the pressure when I think of legacy. I just want to look back and know I did all I wanted, and I had fun while doing it.”

Finally, she touched on causes close to her heart, aligning with Global Citizen’s mission.

“I’ve always been an advocate for women, children, the underprivileged, and the vulnerable. That’s why this platform means so much to me.”

Ayra Starr is no longer just a rising star — she is proof that Afrobeats has taken its rightful seat on the global stage.
