ASUU Deal Sealed: FG Captures Full Funding In 2026 Budget

The Federal Government has confirmed that the newly signed agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is fully funded and captured in the 2026 budget. Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, said the move is designed to end persistent strikes and stabilise Nigeria’s public university system.

Speaking on Arise TV interview, Ahmad explained that the government abandoned the flawed 2009 agreement and opted for a fresh renegotiation led by senior officials with a clear understanding of governance and fiscal capacity. She noted that President Bola Tinubu personally approved the deal before it was included in the budget.

According to the minister, the agreed 40 per cent increment is an allowance, not a salary increase, and will take effect from January 1, 2026. Other academic allowances, including consolidated, CARTA and professor allowances, have also been approved.

Ahmad assured that the government is committed to full implementation, welcoming ASUU’s pledge to maintain industrial peace during the process.
