ASUU Calls Off Two-Week Strike, Gives FG One-Month Ultimatum to Meet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike and granted the Federal Government a one-month grace period to address the unresolved issues that triggered the industrial action.

The decision was reached at an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) held on Tuesday.

Naija News reports that the Federal Government had earlier assured that several of ASUU’s long-standing demands were already being addressed. However, the union maintained that only “concrete actions and full implementation” would determine its next steps after the one-month deadline.

Among ASUU’s major grievances are the full implementation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, payment of outstanding promotion arrears, and the mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).

The lecturers are also demanding adequate funding for the revitalisation of public universities, improved infrastructure, better working conditions, and the protection of academic freedom across campuses.

In addition, ASUU raised concerns over the alleged victimisation of its members and ongoing disputes surrounding land revocation at the University of Abuja.

Union leaders warned that failure by the Federal Government to make tangible progress within the one-month grace period could lead to a fresh round of industrial action.
