ASUU-AAUA Suspends Academic Activities Over Unpaid Salaries: Ondo Govt Reacts

The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has ordered its members to suspend all academic activities indefinitely.

This decision comes after the Ondo State Government allegedly failed to clear outstanding salaries and arrears owed to lecturers.

The directive, signed by ASUU-AAUA Chairperson, Dr. Boluwaji Oshodi, and Secretary, Dr. Olusegun Taiwo, was made public on Sunday, following a congress meeting held on Thursday, August 21.

According to the memo, members unanimously resolved to withdraw their services until all financial obligations were fully met.

“By this memo, our members have been directed to withdraw their services from all academic activities in the university until all outstanding salaries and arrears are paid,” the notice stated.

Background of the Strike

This latest action follows a 14-day warning strike declared in June by the Joint Action Committee of Ondo State-owned Tertiary Institutions (ODSTI), of which ASUU-AAUA is a member.

ODSTI had long protested issues including:

  • Poor and inadequate funding of institutions
  • Non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage
  • Unpaid arrears from previous wage regimes
  • Non-payment of the final tranche of wage awards
  • Outstanding gratuities for retirees
  • Six months of unpaid salaries owed to staff of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo

Despite repeated appeals, the union insists that the state government has neglected workers’ welfare for too long.

Government’s Response

Reacting to the development, Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, assured the public that the government was already working on resolving the crisis.

“A committee was set up to resolve the issue. It has met and recommendations have been made. For the salary arrears, the governor has already directed the university to commence payment. I am confident the matter will be resolved within days,” Ajanaku said.

With the strike now in effect, students of AAUA face fresh uncertainty as academic activities remain on hold until the government and ASUU-AAUA reach a resolution.
