Akpabio Escalates Akpoti-Uduaghan Suspension Dispute to Supreme Court

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has taken the suspension case of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Supreme Court, following a series of setbacks in lower courts.

The legal battle stems from Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension after raising concerns about procedural irregularities in the Senate in February 2025. Akpabio, acting as appellant, is seeking to regularise and sustain his appeal, arguing the Senate acted within its constitutional powers under Section 60.

The case raises critical questions on parliamentary discipline, constitutional rights, and judicial intervention in legislative matters. Akpoti-Uduaghan maintains her suspension was unlawful and violated her right to a fair hearing, while also challenging a related contempt ruling linked to a social media post.

The Supreme Court has now formally served all parties, setting the stage for the apex court to determine whether the Senate acted within its powers or overstepped its authority in disciplining the lawmaker.
