Africa’s Untapped Gas: NUPRC Urges Market Integration

At the 9th Nigeria International Energy Summit, NUPRC CEO Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan revealed that over 180 trillion cubic feet of Africa’s gas remains untapped due to fragmented markets and unaligned regulations. She urged African regulators to harmonise policies through AFRIPERF, integrate infrastructure, and adopt sustainability standards to unlock industrialisation and inclusive growth.

Eyesan highlighted Africa’s energy potential: 8% of global oil and gas reserves, 30% of critical minerals, and 1.5 billion people, mostly young and economically active. She stressed that investors are deterred not by resources, but by inconsistent rules.

Nigeria is leading by example with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, AKK Pipeline, Nigeria–Morocco Gas Pipeline, and the revived Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline. Local content leaders urged a shift from compliance to performance-driven strategies to create globally competitive indigenous companies.

NNPC VP Olalekan Ogunleye confirmed gas projects are fundable if properly structured, citing NLNG Train 7 as a model. NCDMB also highlighted training over 10,000 youths in high-demand oil and gas skills, including subsea engineering and drilling, ensuring Africa can transform local content into industrial mastery.
