Africa at 50: Murtala Muhammed Legacy Revisited

African leaders have been urged to defend the Murtala Muhammed legacy by standing firm against external control and prioritising Africa’s own interests. The call was made in Lagos during a high-level policy workshop marking 50 years since the assassination of Nigeria’s former Head of State.

Held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, the event reflected on General Muhammed’s famous declaration that Africa had “come of age.” Speakers stressed that true independence means Africa strategic autonomy, not reliance on foreign aid or imposed solutions.

NIIA Director-General, Dr. Eghosa Osaghae, noted that Africa must now act with confidence in a multipolar world by embracing African solutions to African problems. He warned that dependence weakens sovereignty and limits progress.

The Murtala Muhammed Foundation described the late leader as a symbol of courage, pride and Pan-African unity, urging young Africans to pursue diplomacy and governance. Experts agreed that while Africa has potential, bold leadership and self-reliance remain unfinished business.
