Senegal captain Sadio Mane has explained the reason he stopped his teammates from walking off the pitch during the tense AFCON final clash against Morocco on Sunday night.
The encounter, which Senegal won one–nil after extra time, was momentarily halted late in regulation time when the referee awarded Morocco a controversial penalty for a foul on Brahim Diaz. The decision angered the Senegalese players, leading them to protest by leaving the pitch.
Mane, however, intervened, urging calm and insisting the match should continue. Speaking after the game, the Liverpool forward said football must be respected despite officiating errors. He noted that referees can make mistakes, but abandoning a match watched by millions would have sent the wrong message.
According to Mane, continuing the game was the fairest option for football, the fans, and the image of the tournament. Senegal eventually secured victory in extra time through Pape Gueye’s goal, sealing their second AFCON title.
