Activist, Ann-Kio Briggs and PDP Leaders Knock Tinubu’s Emergency Rule In Rivers

The lifting of the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State has continued to spark heated reactions, with environmental and human rights activist, Ann-Kio Briggs, accusing President Bola Tinubu of unjustly declaring the emergency in the first place.

Speaking in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Briggs argued that Tinubu did no favor to Rivers people by suspending or lifting the order.

“Tinubu has been the problem of the state,” she said firmly.

Briggs stressed that Governor Siminialayi Fubara still enjoys the organic support of the majority of Rivers people, particularly women from different walks of life.

“The people of Rivers State are still in support of Siminialayi Fubara. But whether that support will translate into good governance, peace, security, and development remains to be seen,” she added.

PDP Urges Fubara Not to Abandon Party

Meanwhile, the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appealed to the reinstated governor not to dump the party after his return to office.

Vice-Chairman (Lagos Central), Hakeem Olalemi, said Fubara must focus on rebuilding Rivers State after months of political turmoil.

“The governor should not muster any fear; the deed has been done. He should continue strong and be faithful in doing what is expected of him as governor,” Olalemi told journalists.

Olalemi further urged the governor to strengthen the PDP, nurture it into a bigger platform, and remain faithful to the party that brought him to power.

“Fubara must make Rivers great again. He should not jettison the party but ensure it becomes stronger in the state and region,” he added.

Background of the Political Crisis

Naija News recalls that President Tinubu declared an emergency rule on March 18, suspending Fubara, his deputy Prof. Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly.

The drastic measure was linked to a prolonged political feud between Fubara and his predecessor, now FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

On Wednesday, Tinubu formally lifted the emergency order, directing all suspended officials to resume duties on Thursday.
