The Abia State House of Assembly has announced plans to conduct a peaceful march to Abuja, seeking the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
This decision follows a motion of urgent public importance, moved on Tuesday by Deputy Speaker Mr. Austin Mmeregini during the plenary session.
The Assembly is urging the Federal Government to release Kanu on medical grounds. This move aligns with recent efforts by Governor Otti and other South-East leaders who are advocating for Kanu’s freedom, particularly in response to an appeal from Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.
Deputy Speaker Mmeregini, representing Umuahia East Constituency, raised concerns about Kanu’s worsening health and called for the House’s support in the governor’s ongoing initiatives.
He also appealed to South-East National Assembly members and Ohanaeze Ndigbo leaders to intensify their advocacy for Kanu’s medical care and unconditional release.
Mr. Isiehi Boniface, representing Ikwuano State Constituency, suggested that the Abia Assembly visit the National Assembly to discuss with the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, followed by a press conference.
Kalu Nwoke, representing Ohafia South, noted that Kanu’s continued detention has exacerbated insecurity in Ohafia, despite efforts by Governor Otti to restore peace.
Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa criticized the Federal Government for ignoring a valid court order that granted Kanu bail. He emphasized that the law must be upheld, urging the President to show mercy and release Kanu.
“The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu defies the rule of law, and unless there is undisclosed information, he should be released. Every citizen, including Kanu, deserves their fundamental rights,” Emeruwa stated.
