The fight against oil theft in the Niger Delta has intensified as security forces continue to strike at criminal networks sabotaging the nation’s economy.
In the last two weeks, troops uncovered nine illegal refineries, arrested 17 suspected vandals, and seized more than 45,000 litres of stolen petroleum products, according to a statement released on Sunday by Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations.
Rivers State Raids
In Okarki Community, Ahoada West LGA, soldiers intercepted a Toyota 4Runner SUV loaded with over 1,600 litres of suspected stolen diesel. The driver reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled.
Troops also recovered 23 sacks of refined petroleum products and, in Degema, impounded a wooden boat carrying illegal fuel.
At Obiafor in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA, a vandalised pipeline was discovered, along with a 250-metre hose, metal pipes, and sacks containing 300 litres of illegally refined AGO (diesel).
Delta State Operations
In Ogwu Community, Warri South LGA, soldiers dismantled a massive illegal storage hub. A 20,000-litre capacity tanker truck filled with stolen diesel was seized, alongside pumping machines, metering devices, and other refining equipment.
Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom Sweep
In Biseni, Yenagoa LGA, dugout pits and refining sites were destroyed, while in Okordia, soldiers intercepted a Toyota Camry carrying over 600 litres of stolen AGO.
In Akwa Ibom State, patrols along notorious smuggling routes were stepped up to disrupt saboteurs’ supply chains.
Army Vows Zero Tolerance
The Army stressed that these operations are aimed at protecting national assets, crippling oil thieves, and restoring environmental integrity across the Niger Delta.
“These criminals will not be allowed to continue sabotaging Nigeria’s economy,” the statement read.
The sustained military pressure has already disrupted several networks, sending a strong warning to economic saboteurs operating in the region.
