Just In: Police Commissioner Ordered detention of Officers After Viral Assault Video Shakes Nigeria

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the detention of officers caught on video assaulting a motorist during a stop-and-search operation — a move that comes after nationwide outrage over the viral footage.

The clip, which sparked fury online, showed the officers trying to forcibly yank off the motorist’s eyeglasses, suspecting they contained a hidden camera.

Confirming the crackdown, Lagos police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin revealed that the entire squad involved has been disbanded. In their place, a new tactical team has been set up, one he said will operate with “zero tolerance for corruption” and “strict respect for human rights.”

“Following a thorough preliminary investigation, the officers have been detained and will face an orderly room trial,” Hundeyin wrote on 𝕏. “Justice will be served swiftly and transparently.”

The Lagos Command stressed that the assault was an isolated case, insisting it does not reflect the values of the Nigeria Police Force.
