Segun Sowunmi, former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has commended President Bola Tinubu for his recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. During an appearance on Channels Television on Monday, Sowunmi emphasized that this decision reflects Tinubu’s leadership qualities.
Sowunmi argued that declaring a state of emergency was the only viable option available, stating, “In this particular Rivers case, I do not see any other alternative except, of course, if we were told that the court agreed with the governor’s side of the Assembly, which naturally means that the other guys would have to move away, but the court did not.”
He further explained that the court had indicated there was no appropriate budget for the situation, reinforcing the necessity of the president’s intervention. “The truth of the matter is that it is one of the decisions the president took that showed that he can lead because he stepped in,” Sowunmi added.
He noted that the decision may not have been favorable for the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, as it could have left the State Assembly in a precarious position. Sowunmi suggested that Tinubu’s actions were strategic to maintain a level playing field.
