The Director of News and Politics Editor at Arise News, Sumner Sambo, has sparked heated debate after asserting that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration performed better in poverty alleviation than President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Monday, Sambo argued that Buhari’s tenure (2015–2023) introduced more structured anti-poverty programmes compared to the “slow and poorly coordinated” efforts under Tinubu.
He acknowledged Buhari’s strategies and schemes, which he claimed directly targeted poverty reduction, while criticizing Tinubu’s approach as unfocused.
“Between 2015 and 2023, Buhari seemed to roll out poverty reduction initiatives far better than what we are witnessing now under President Tinubu,” Sambo stated.
The Arise TV editor also highlighted the vacuum left after the dismissal of former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Beta Edu, who, according to him, had been effective in coordinating poverty-related policies.
“Since her sack, the ministry has lacked focus. The appointments made so far are weak, and there is little visible effort towards poverty alleviation,” Sambo lamented.
He urged President Tinubu to take the criticisms seriously and make poverty reduction a top priority in his administration.
