Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez has been slapped with a six-match suspension after spitting at a Seattle Sounders staff member during Inter Miami’s 3-0 defeat in the Leagues Cup final.
The punishment, announced by tournament organizers, applies solely to Leagues Cup fixtures and will take effect from the 2026 edition. Due to the structure of the tournament, the ban could stretch across multiple seasons if Miami fail to progress deep into the competition.
The Leagues Cup features a group stage followed by knockout rounds, with clubs able to play a maximum of six matches per edition.
Suarez, 38, publicly apologized on Thursday for his conduct. However, he was not the only player sanctioned after the heated post-match clash.
- Sergio Busquets received a two-match suspension for punching Seattle’s Obed Vargas.
- Tomas Avilés was handed a three-match ban.
- Seattle coach Steven Lenhart was suspended for five matches.
All four individuals were also fined.
While the sanctions do not affect Suarez’s Major League Soccer appearances, reports suggest that further disciplinary measures may still be under review.
