FG Breaks Silence on Alleged ₦500 Fuel Surcharge – Nigerians Won’t Pay in January 2026!

The Federal Government has dismissed reports claiming Nigerians will begin paying a ₦500 surcharge on every ₦10,000 worth of fuel from January 2026, describing them as misleading and inaccurate.

The clarification came through a video statement by the Chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, released by the State House.

Oyedele explained that while the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Act does provide for a fuel surcharge under the new tax law, it has not yet taken effect. He stressed that implementation can only begin after an official directive from the Minister of Finance.

“What exists is a law enacted years back with a fuel surcharge provision under the FEMA Act. It is in the new tax law, but contrary to the rumours, it won’t start in January 2026. The effective date will be set by the Minister of Finance when considered appropriate,” Oyedele said.

He added that the surcharge, when implemented, is meant to fund transport infrastructure projects that would reduce logistics costs, ease commuter burdens, and help tackle inflation in the long term.

The Federal Government assured Nigerians that no immediate fuel surcharge will be enforced until proper directives are issued.
