Tinubu Orders 2026 Sports Funding Reset, Backs NSC Reform

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major overhaul of Nigeria’s sports sector, ordering a reset of funding structures from the 2026 fiscal year. The move aims to make sports economically viable, globally competitive, and free from long-standing bureaucratic delays.

Announcing the decision via his official X handle, Tinubu described sports as one of Nigeria’s strongest national brands and a powerful tool for unity and global influence. He admitted that fragmented funding, late release of funds, and weak infrastructure have slowed development for years.

To fix this, the President directed key economic ministries to ensure timely and adequate funding for sports infrastructure, programmes, and international competitions. He stressed that once the national budget is passed, sports funds must be released immediately to support athletes’ preparation.

Tinubu also ordered a review of scattered sports allocations across MDAs, with savings moved into a unified framework under the National Sports Commission. Anchored on the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy, the reform targets jobs, tourism, investment, and global success.
