The Nasarawa State Government has approved ₦13 billion for the construction of one-kilometre roads in each of the state’s 13 local government areas, strengthening its push for grassroots development.
The Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Aminu Muazu-Maifata, disclosed this in Lafia, explaining that the move followed Governor Abdullahi Sule’s approval of financial autonomy for councils. A coordinating framework now reviews council needs monthly to ensure transparency and effective use of funds.
According to the commissioner, 30 per cent of the ₦13bn has already been released, with construction ongoing across various locations. Additional funds will be disbursed as projects advance.
Beyond roads, local councils are executing projects in health, education, and rural infrastructure, while the state has also saved over ₦4 billion on behalf of the LGAs. The government is equally paying ₦80 million monthly for gratuities of retired local government workers.
Officials say the initiative reflects fiscal discipline and a renewed focus on bringing development closer to the people.
