Nigeria’s Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has explained why the military initially denied reports of an attempted coup against President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, Musa said the armed forces needed verified intelligence before making such a sensitive issue public. According to him, coup allegations carry grave consequences and must be handled with extreme caution.

He disclosed that investigations later uncovered facts through joint intelligence efforts involving the Nigerian Army, DSS, and Defence Intelligence Agency. Only after confirming the credibility of the threat did the Defence Headquarters officially acknowledge the foiled plot in January.

Musa stressed that rushing to confirm a coup attempt without solid evidence could mislead Nigerians and damage national stability. “It is better to say no initially than to give conflicting reports later,” he noted.

The defence chief described the incident as an act of indiscipline, adding that thorough investigations were necessary to expose those involved and protect Nigeria’s democracy.
