Akpabio Warns Senators Over Fake Tax Law Copies in Circulation

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has directed all senators to rely strictly on certified copies of the newly passed Tax Reform Act, amid concerns over the circulation of fake and unauthorised versions. He instructed lawmakers to obtain only documents issued by the Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly.

Akpabio cautioned that any other versions in circulation do not reflect what was approved by the National Assembly or assented to by the President. According to him, the directive is aimed at preventing misinformation, misinterpretation and possible abuse of the new tax law at a time of heightened public scrutiny.

The warning comes as controversy deepens over allegations that parts of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, were altered after legislative passage. A House of Representatives Minority Caucus committee claimed its probe uncovered three different versions of the law, with discrepancies between the gazetted copy and certified true copies.

While House leadership dismissed the committee’s report as procedurally invalid, the Minority Caucus insists the findings raise serious accountability concerns. The Senate adjourned plenary following Akpabio’s directive, as pressure mounts for clarity when legislative activities resume.
