Papiri School Shutdown: Fear, Trauma Deepen Education Crisis in Niger

Two months after the abduction of students and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, Niger State, teaching and learning remain suspended, leaving parents and pupils trapped in uncertainty. The November attack, followed by the deadly Kasuwan Daji massacre, has worsened fears and stalled the school’s reopening.

Although the 230 abducted students and teachers were rescued through federal intervention, residents say poor security continues to threaten lives. Findings show a lack of military bases, overstretched police personnel, and weak coordination among security agencies, emboldening bandits in the area.

Parents warn that the continued closure of St. Mary’s, the only quality school serving over 50 communities, could permanently push children out of school, deepening poverty and illiteracy. While schools have reopened in safer parts of Niger State, those in the Niger North Senatorial zone remain shut. Community leaders are urging urgent security action to restore education and peace.
