The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the Federal Government’s newly introduced tax reform laws, describing official assurances as misleading and disconnected from the realities Nigerians face.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the level of hardship in the country is unprecedented, accusing the government of denying the suffering of citizens. He argued that claims the poor would be exempt from the new taxes were untrue and would further worsen living conditions.
The four tax reform laws, which took effect on January 1, 2026, sparked controversy after allegations of inconsistencies between versions passed by the National Assembly and those gazetted. The House of Representatives later released Certified True Copies to address public concerns.
While President Bola Tinubu insists the reforms will strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal system and protect low-income earners, opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi maintain the laws are ill-timed and burdensome.
