Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved clemency for inmates across correctional facilities in the state as part of New Year activities. The gesture followed recommendations by the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney General, Dr Kayode Ajulo.
According to the government, the decision was driven by compassion and a commitment to rehabilitation, targeting inmates who showed remorse and good conduct. After a thorough review process, several inmates were granted outright release, while others had their sentences reduced or commuted.
The council explained that factors such as time already served, health condition, conduct in custody and prospects for reintegration were considered. The move reflects the state government’s resolve to give deserving inmates a second chance and promote reform within the correctional system.
