Nigeria’s Social Protection Gains Global Praise: World Bank Lauds NG-CARES

The World Bank has commended Nigeria’s leadership for its innovative and large-scale social protection initiatives. During his first visit to Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, Robert Chase, World Bank Regional Manager for West and Central Africa, highlighted that the $750 million NG-CARES fund has leveraged over $2.2 billion in state-level investments.

Chase emphasized the program’s role in supporting vulnerable households, micro and small enterprises, and farmers. The first phase of NG-CARES will conclude this year, with expanded financing set for December 2025 and full implementation in January 2026. Both the federal government and the World Bank reaffirmed commitment to inclusive growth, poverty reduction, and harmonized social protection systems across all tiers of government.

Bagudu stressed that functional ward-level governance structures are key to maximizing impact and translating reforms into measurable improvements in citizens’ lives.
