Reactions have intensified across the country following President Bola Tinubu’s directive ordering the withdrawal of about 100,000 police officers currently attached to VIPs, top politicians, and influential individuals.
The president issued the order during a security briefing at the State House in Abuja, insisting that the officers be redeployed to core policing duties, including counter-insurgency operations, as the nation battles rising insecurity.
Tinubu also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers to strengthen manpower and improve national security response.
While the directive has received mixed reactions, many Nigerians are divided over its feasibility and impact.
Former federal lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani described the move as “a good policy that may never be implemented,” arguing that similar directives in the past ended as mere statements.
On the other hand, former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad applauded the president’s decision, noting that it will allow security agencies to refocus their resources on their primary duty—ensuring public safety.
Analysts say the coming weeks will determine whether this policy marks a major turning point in Nigeria’s long-standing security crisis.
