Alan Shearer Warns Man City’s Defence Is Becoming a Big Title Threat

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has voiced strong concerns over Manchester City’s defensive struggles, insisting the lapses could cost them in this season’s Premier League title race.

Shearer shared his views after Pep Guardiola’s side suffered a 2–1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park, a loss that denied City the chance to close the gap on leaders Arsenal.

City Lose Ground in Title Hunt

Manchester City entered the weekend hoping to move within one point of Arsenal ahead of the North London derby.
Instead, two goals from Harvey Barnes ensured Newcastle took all three points, pushing City down to third place—seven points off the top.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Shearer said Guardiola’s frustration was understandable but insisted the real issue was City’s defending.

“They Could Have Conceded Six or Seven” – Shearer

Shearer argued that City were “well beaten” in the second half, adding that Newcastle wasted several clear chances.

“They didn’t create a lot… but for me, the concern would be how many chances they are giving up,” he said.
“If Newcastle had their shooting boots on, they should have scored six or seven – they missed four absolute sitters.”

He highlighted the absence of Rodri as a major factor, stressing that the midfielder’s protective presence has been crucial to City’s stability.

City Not as Sharp at the Back

Shearer noted that while City’s attack—especially with Erling Haaland—remains dangerous, the defensive unit “isn’t as sharp as it used to be.”

Guardiola is now under pressure to fix the leaks at the back as the title race intensifies.
