Ndidi Suspended, Lookman Urged to Step Up

Nigeria will confront the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday without Wilfred Ndidi, who is suspended for the pivotal 2026 World Cup playoff final after receiving a booking in the 4-1 victory over Gabon.

Wilfred Ndidi‘s yellow card on Thursday results in his absence from the match that will determine which team advances to the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026.

This development poses a challenge for the Super Eagles, although the return of Semi Ajayi provides head coach Eric Chelle with some relief. Ajayi, who missed the semi-final due to card accumulation, is set to play in Rabat.

The match is scheduled at the newly constructed Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, where Nigeria triumphed over Gabon on Thursday evening.

In the meantime, former Super Eagles striker Victor Ikpeba has expressed concern regarding Ademola Lookman’s recent form for the national team.

Lookman, recognized as Africa’s best footballer, struggled to make an impact against Gabon and was substituted around the sixty-minute mark.

Chukwueze also had a subdued performance and was replaced by Chidera Ejuke, while Moses Simon took over for Lookman.

Speaking on SuperSport, Ikpeba commented on Lookman’s ongoing struggle to regain his form after transfer issues sidelined him at the start of the season.

“I would like to see more from Lookman, we have not seen the Lookman of old,” Ikpeba said.

“We understand he lacks match fitness and his form is not yet restored. We need to see more from players like Chukwueze and Lookman.”
