The Governor of Adamawa State and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Convention Planning Committee, Ahmadu Fintiri, has confirmed that the party will proceed to Ibadan for its national elective convention scheduled for this weekend.
Trendgoss News reports that Fintiri addressed journalists on Thursday night following a high-level stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja.
The strategic meeting, held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, gathered key party figures, including Oyo State Governor and convention host, Seyi Makinde; PDP acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba; and former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, among others.
After the closed-door session, Fintiri expressed enthusiasm about the decisions made, affirming that nothing would prevent the convention from proceeding as planned.
He stated, “We’ve just come out of our critical stakeholders’ meeting where a lot of elaborate decisions were taken. I want to tell you here that we are going to Ibadan for our convention, and the convention is sacrosanct.”
This announcement comes amid conflicting court orders and internal tensions concerning the legitimacy of the convention.
Trendgoss News previously reported that delegates and party leaders continue to arrive in Ibadan, Oyo State, ahead of Saturday’s event.
The National Vice Chairman (South-West) of the PDP, Kamorudeen Ajisafe, informed Punch on Thursday that the party had “secured the attendance of delegates from at least two-thirds of the 36 states,” thereby meeting the constitutional requirement for a valid convention.
He said, “As of Wednesday afternoon, delegates had already begun arriving. People have started arriving, delegates, stakeholders, state chairmen. We have secured two-thirds of the attendance of states, apart from one or two that we are doubting. Even if you don’t have all 36 states, you are still good to go with two-thirds.”
