The Federal Government has clarified that no inmate granted clemency under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent prerogative of mercy exercise has been released yet.
In a statement on Thursday, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said the review process is still ongoing to ensure every name and recommendation meets legal and procedural standards before any release order is finalized.
Fagbemi emphasized that the government remains committed to transparency and due diligence, noting that the current verification is part of standard administrative procedures.
This clarification comes after public backlash followed the announcement of Tinubu’s presidential pardon for selected inmates. The AGF reassured Nigerians that no one will be freed until all reviews are completed.
