A new political wave is gathering momentum as the South-North Progressive Forum (SNPF) has launched a nationwide campaign for fairness, equity, and the rotation of presidential power between the North and South.
At a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, the chairman of the forum, Festus Onyekwulisi, declared that allowing the South to retain the presidency in 2027 would correct years of imbalance and strengthen national unity.
North vs South Balance
Onyekwulisi revealed that based on Nigeria’s political history, the North has ruled for about 24 years, while the South has held power for only 18 years.
“Giving the South another four years in 2027 will correct this imbalance and deepen Nigeria’s democratic spirit of inclusion,” he said.
10 Million Votes Target
The SNPF disclosed that it has established structures in over 30,000 communities and appointed coordinators across the country, with an ambitious goal of mobilising 10 million votes for a southern presidential candidate.
Onyekwulisi added that the group’s philosophy of “rightful defection” urges Nigerians to choose competence, equity, and credibility over party loyalty.
2031 Deal and Zoning Push
While pushing for the South in 2027, SNPF promised to back a northern candidate in 2031 as part of what it described as a commitment to national integration.
The forum also urged all political parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to adopt zoning arrangements that reflect fairness and equity.
FCT Statehood Demand
In a bold move, SNPF further called for legislative reforms to grant Abuja full state status in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling affirming the FCT’s equal standing.
The group proposed that the FCT should have a governor, three senatorial districts, House of Representatives members, and increased federal allocations.
With the 2027 elections already casting shadows, the SNPF’s position is expected to spark intense political debates across the country.
