2027 Politics: Why SDP Pulled Out of Anti-Tinubu Coalition Talks

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has explained its decision to withdraw from ongoing coalition talks aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Sunday, Prince Adewole Adebayo, the SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, said the party exited the discussions due to credibility, ideological and integrity concerns surrounding some opposition figures. He stressed that opposing President Tinubu alone is not a sufficient basis for forming an alliance.

Adebayo revealed that several politicians were rejected after internal screening, noting that some were denied interviews outright. He accused certain opposition actors of seeking to capitalise on public frustration without offering credible alternatives.

He warned that replacing the current administration with “worse” leaders would not serve Nigerians, insisting that the SDP would not join any coalition driven by opportunism, corruption allegations or personal ambition.
