The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed confidence in its popularity and acceptance across Nigeria, insisting that it remains the most preferred political party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, stated this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday. He emphasized that defections from the party remain “very minimal” compared to the growing number of politicians joining its ranks.
“We have minimal defection—very minimal compared to people who are trooping in every day,” Yilwatda said.
The APC Chairman highlighted movements within the National Assembly, state assemblies, and among governors as evidence of the party’s continued dominance in Nigerian politics.
“If you look at the members of the National Assembly, State Assemblies and governors who are trooping back into the APC from other political parties, it tells you that APC is still the most preferred political party and we are still even receiving more people,” he added.
Professor Yilwatda further argued that this influx reflects the confidence Nigerians still have in the APC.
“This shows the kind of popularity and acceptance the APC has. I cannot say that one or two persons from APC may not want to move to the other side,” he noted.
He assured that the party leadership is actively reaching out to reconcile with members who left, stressing that the APC remains their true political home.
The chairman’s remarks come as Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 general elections, with political parties intensifying strategies to consolidate support across the country.
