2027 Election: Tinubu’s APC Tightens Grip as Opposition Battles Cracks

Nigeria’s opposition faces an uphill task ahead of the 2027 general election as the Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to expand its control across the country’s most populous states. Recent political movements show the ruling party consolidating power through strategic defections, while opposition parties grapple with internal disputes and weak coordination.

From controlling about 21 states at the start of Tinubu’s administration, the APC now commands 29 states, leaving the opposition with just seven. The defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has further boosted APC’s influence in a state widely regarded as Nigeria’s political nerve centre due to its massive voter population.

Meanwhile, the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is struggling with disagreements among key figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, over the presidential ticket. Analysts warn that unless unity is achieved quickly, the opposition’s chances in 2027 may continue to fade.
