2027: Bishop Kukah Cautions Jonathan Against Political Comeback, Warns of Hidden Agendas

Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah, has issued a strong warning to former President Goodluck Jonathan, urging him to tread carefully as calls for a 2027 presidential comeback intensify.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Democracy Dialogue of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Accra, Ghana, Bishop Kukah praised Jonathan’s historic 2015 decision to concede defeat — a move he described as an act of sacrifice that preserved Nigeria’s democracy.

Kukah recalled that Jonathan had the power and resources to resist the election outcome but instead chose peace.

“When you made that call on March 31, 2015, it was between yourself, your conscience, and your God. By taking that decision, you reversed what could have been chaos and gave Nigerians hope, honor, and dignity,” Kukah said, referencing Jonathan’s book My Transition Hours.

⚠️ A Warning on 2027

The fiery cleric, however, cautioned the ex-president to be wary of political actors pushing him for selfish gains.

Quoting former Defence Minister General Theophilus Danjuma, Kukah warned:
“The voice of the devil is not so far from the voice of God. Listen carefully to those who want to use you as an instrument for the elongation of their interests, not yours or Nigeria’s.”

He urged Jonathan to pray, reflect deeply, and ensure any decision he makes is guided by conscience and the national interest.

Kukah further noted that Jonathan’s choice in 2015 remains one of the most defining moments in Nigeria’s democratic history, stressing that it showed sacrifice over power and national peace over personal ambition.
