The Federal Government is expected to generate about ₦5.4 billion from Nigerian pilgrims participating in the 2026 Hajj, following the introduction of a compulsory service charge.
This was disclosed by the Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), a civil society organisation monitoring transparency in Hajj operations. In a statement issued by its national coordinator, the group revealed that each pilgrim is required to pay a 2 per cent service levy directly to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
According to IHR, with the official Hajj fare fixed at about ₦7.6 million per pilgrim, the charge amounts to roughly ₦136,417 per person. Based on Nigeria’s allocation of 40,000 pilgrims, the total revenue is estimated to fall between ₦5.3 billion and ₦5.4 billion.
In dollar terms, each pilgrim will pay $92.46, bringing the total to approximately $3.7 million, an increase from the $90 charged during the 2025 Hajj.
The group explained that the levy is mainly linked to transferring funds to NAHCON’s foreign account in Saudi Arabia.
