2015 Election: Amaechi Reveals Anti-Rigging Tactics That Shook Nigeria

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has recounted how his political team mobilised Nigerians to resist electoral manipulation ahead of the 2015 general election. Speaking at a public lecture, Amaechi said their strategy made it clear that any attempt to rig the polls would trigger widespread resistance.

According to him, voter apathy remains the biggest threat to credible elections, stressing that citizens—not government—hold the real power to enforce electoral reform. Amaechi argued that constant claims of pre-written results discourage voters and weaken democracy.

He urged Nigerians to prioritise competence and capacity over ethnic or regional sentiments when choosing leaders, insisting that leadership requires courage and the ability to drive national change.

Amaechi also recalled how strong grassroots mobilisation limited opposition campaigns in key northern states, including Kano, during the 2015 race. He maintained that active citizen participation remains the strongest safeguard against electoral malpractice in Nigeria.
