₦1.5trn Controversy: El-Rufai Accuses Tinubu, Mentions Impeachment

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of committing what he described as an impeachable offence over alleged unauthorised deductions from the federation account.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time, El-Rufai claimed that ₦100 billion has been deducted monthly from the federation account without approval from the National Assembly or state assemblies. He said the deductions, which have allegedly lasted for over 15 months, amount to ₦1.5 trillion.

According to El-Rufai, the funds belong partly to states and therefore require legislative appropriation at both federal and state levels. He described the alleged deductions as unconstitutional and questioned their usage, citing worsening insecurity across the country despite the funds reportedly being spent.

The former governor also criticised the government’s approach to security, asking why communities are being encouraged to defend themselves if such large sums are being withdrawn monthly. His comments have sparked renewed debate over transparency, accountability and governance under the current administration.
